What Is the Grief Recovery Method?

People ask me this question more than any other, usually in some version of: “What is it, exactly, that you do?” It is a fair question, because grief coaching does not look like most of what we have been offered before.

The Grief Recovery Method is an evidence-based program developed by the Grief Recovery Institute. It has been used for more than forty-five years, and it rests on a single idea that most of us were never taught: grief is not a disorder to be managed. It is unfinished business to be completed.

The problem with “time heals”

Think about someone you know who lost a spouse fifteen years ago and still cannot say their name out loud without their voice breaking — not from tender memory, but from raw, unprocessed pain. Time did not heal that. Time only passed.

What actually heals is action taken within time. That is the difference. And the reason so many grievers feel stuck is not that they are weak or broken or doing it wrong. It is that no one ever handed them the tools.

Sympathy is what people offer a griever. Tools are what a griever actually needs.

What the seven weeks look like

We meet one-on-one for one hour a week, for seven consecutive weeks. There is a beginning, a middle and an end — which, for a lot of my clients, is the first relief they feel. You will always know where you are in the process.

 • A change in perspective. Before we do anything else, we look honestly at what you were taught about loss — from your family, your church, your culture — and which of those lessons have been quietly working against you.
 • A new set of tools. Specific, teachable skills for identifying what is unfinished and how to complete it. These are not coping strategies for getting through the day. They are recovery tools.
 • Reading and writing assignments. Short work you do between sessions. This is where the real movement happens, and it is why the program is seven weeks rather than seven hours.
 • One loss at a time. The method works by taking your single most painful loss all the way through to completion. Once you know how, you can do it again for every other loss you carry.

What it is not

It is not therapy, counseling or medical treatment, and I am careful to say so. Many of my clients see a licensed therapist and work with me at the same time — the two fit together well. Grief recovery is educational. I am not diagnosing or treating you; I am teaching you a process and walking it with you.

It is also not a support group. There is no circle of chairs and no requirement to perform your pain in front of strangers. It is a private conversation between two people who both know what loss feels like.

The part I did not expect

When I went through the method myself, I was not looking to become a specialist. I was a mother who had buried her eighteen-year-old son, and I had already tried faith, counseling and the love of good people. All of it mattered. None of it had given me a way to actually put something down.

The method did. And the moment it did, I knew I would spend the rest of my life handing it to other people.
